Hello,

Please confirm that my below interpretation of NFPA 70 and NFPA 70E are correct. Thanks in advance for this and any more information you can provide. -P

NFPA 70

110.16(A) “Electrical equipment, such as switchboards, switchgear, panelboards, industrial control panels, meter socket enclosures, and motor control centers” shall include factory markings or warning labels that do NOT require detailed information (incident energy, arc flash boundary, PPE, etc.) Exhibit 110.8 Warning label example includes the following text only: Warning – Arc Flash Hazard. Appropriate PPE Required. Failure to Comply Can Result in Death or Injury. Refer to NFPA 70E.

110.16(B) Service equipment rated 1200A or more shall include a permanent label with the following information:

  1. Nominal system voltage.
  2. Available fault current at the service overcurrent protective Devices.
  3. The clearing time of service overcurrent protective devices based on the available fault current at the service equipment.
  4. The date the label was applied.

110.24(A), (B) and Exception. In industrial installations the permanent label on service equipment is not required, and calculations shall be made readily available.

These requirements imply that for an industrial installation the detailed arc flash information, whether on a label or made readily available, is NOT required for all the equipment in the facility with the exception of the service equipment, and even that equipment only requires the 4 items listed above.

NFPA 70E

130.5(H) Similar to 110.16(A) above, except the label is more than a simple warning label and must include:

  1. Nominal system voltage.
  2. Arc flash boundary.
  3. At least one of the following:
a. Available incident energy and the corresponding working distance, or the arc flash PPE category in Table 130.7(C)(15)(a) or Table 130.7(C)(15)(b) for the equipment, but not both.
b. Minimum arc rating of clothing.
c. Site-specific level of PPE.

130.5(H) Exception No. 2. In industrial installations the permanent label on service equipment is not required, and calculations shall be made readily available.

This is a MUCH more strict requirement ($$$) which includes providing detailed arc flash information listed in the 3 items above, on labels or made readily available for ALL the equipment in the facility, including single phase lighting panels.
