Consulting EE's (myself included) are not responsible for construction site means and methods and safe work practices when designing a project. Yet we are now being asked to calculate arc flash boundaries and essentially participate in deciding a client's maintenance/safety procedures. Does this bother you?

Do you consultants do your own Arc Flash Studies or hire it out?

Be sure to ask your E&O insurer how best to handle the issue. Ours said it was okay to perform engineering calculations such as short circuit, OCPD coordination and arc flash calculations because there are documented industry standard methods of performing these calculations (from IEEE for example).
We do not apply the data calculated to signs nor apply the signs to equipment, since that may be seen as crossing the "means & methods line in the sand"..
