A specification for arc flash analysis has the following requirement:

"For each bus in the table, provide description indicating location within the distribution system."

I'm using SKM software, but I'm interested in how others might interpret this statement, and what information should be provided. An example would be appreciated, thanks.

Allow me to share my method. I may have posted this before, but I can't remember for sure.
  • Each time I add a bus to the SKM model, and connect it with a line to the upstream feeder breaker, I immediately change its name to the name that appears on the one-line diagram (e.g., MCC-5, or MDP, or LPH-2A).
  • I then double click on the name of that bus, so that it is highlighted. I hit "Control-C" to copy that text. Then hit OK. For example, I will use LPH-2A as the panel name.
  • I next double click on the feeder's name. It's default name would be something like "CBL-0003." With its name highlighted, I type "F-" and then hit "Control-V." This changes the default name to "F-LPH-2A." That way, when I look at an output report, I can tell that that wire was the feeder to that particular panel.
  • Similarly, I change the default name of the upstream feeder breaker from "PD-0012" to "FB-LPH-2A."
  • Other names I use include "MB" for the main breaker on a panel, "PF" for the primary feeder to a transformer, "SF" for the secondary feeder from a transformer, "NFB" for the normal feeder breaker serving an ATS, "NF" for the normal feeder to the ATS, "BFB" for the backup source's feeder breaker serving an ATS, and "BF" for the backup source's feeder to the ATS.
  • I don't want to type in the name of the panelboard each time I rename its feeder or its feeder breaker. That risks mistyping. I copy the name of the panel and paste it in each time, to avoid that risk.

I field label everything as shown in the field. Labels are useless unless they are actually applied to the correct equipment. Part of your analysis should be on the equipment naming scheme.
