I am not a field engineer and what I say it is only logic and my simply experience.
The fuse is indeed a good equipment and cable protection. However, most electrical faults do not cause equipment damage and it is very unpleasant to change the fuse all the time.
We witnessed the commissioning of a 20 MVAr synchronous condenser that compensated for the reactive power required to start a 6 MW DC motor through a whole network of transformers and cables.
In order for the compensation to be instantaneous a bank of capacitors canceled out all the inductive reactance. This action brought the short-circuit power from
110 kV on the 6.9 kV busbars which was 7-8 times the nominal power of the busbars.
ABB used a kind of very fast circuit breaker provided with fuse.
Until it stabilized the installation every hour was an interruption. The fuses ended and they brought reserves from Switzerland.
