are all receivers equal?

Had a service call today for the fan and light no longer working off the remote. HO had replaced batteries and lamps and all she could think of. After going through all the trouble shooting song and dance, ended up with the receiver sending an intermittent signal to the fan motor and no signal to the light kit. After looking at the info on the receiver, it is rated at 1 amps. My question: is this the proper receiver? Does this set-up, on a 15 amp ocpd, need a higher rated (amp) receiver, or is this a universal receiver that is isolated from the amperage draw, and hence the 1 amp rating?

Marti,

If the receiver is rated for 1 amp, then that is all the load it will switch. What is the amp

rating of the fan ? What about all the lamps ? It is fine on a 15a circuit.

This is the very reason I try to discourage clients from buying fans with remote controls. They work fine for a while at best. Remove the receiver and wire the fan directly or you'll be working for free with all the call backs.

Have you ever seen a 1 amp branch circuit installed for general lighting and power? The 1 amp rating is for the connected load not the branch circuit rating. Same scenario applies to 600 watt dimmer switch.

How much load does the lamps installed draw. 1 amp = 120 watts, if you have a fixture with 4 or 5 lamps it is easy to overload it.

I am convinced this is the wrong receiver.

Thank you for your input. I learn something new everyday. benaround: I have not checked the amp rating of the fan. The lamps are 65 watts ea and there are four of them (260 w). A/A Fuel: I did remove the receiver.;) kwired: I did consider that, and a it appeared to be a no-brainer, although one would think that the receiver would be rated for the connected load and this one is not. I did some research, as the local supply house did not know, and there are higher rated receivers out there. They are considerably higher.

Again, thank you guys for getting that old calculator in the brain fired up once more. Another good day on the code forum is an answer/help found.:D
