I've been searching around for advice about truck, finally realized that since it's the battery I might be justified in asking question on electrical forum.

'96 dodge ram 2500 diesel, only drive it once a week. When I start driving batteries (it has 2) are not charging, amp guage is showing around 12, sometimes gen. lite comes on. After 5-10 miles at highway speeds, amps go up to 14, gen. lite goes off, all is well for remainder of day. If it's the alternator why does it consistently not work at first and then it does?
