That title should read, 'Are More than 1 Fire pumps required'
I had a friend ask about a the size of a building if there was a requirement to have more than one fire pump. Not sure how many thousand of square foot the building is but is huge. Basically, in the past they had 2 fire pumps, one as a back-up when the other one is down for preventive maintenance, or if the main one fails.
What has happen there has been a remodel, add on addition to the building, and before they had a fire pump for one end of the building and the other end had one also. These were interconnected so that if one was not able to run, the other pump would supply water for that end of the building.
Now its been said that both of these fire pumps are being taken out, and there will be a single 'new one' that can handle the capacity of the new addition and the 2 old sections of the buiding. My questions is , is there a mininum requirement to have a back up pump (or plan at least), if the building is a certain size.?? And What about the preventive maintenance on the controls and fire pump, when it's down is there a requirement to have a back up for huge buildings?? I could not find anything in the NEC except for the periodic testing and power supply souces. Not sure if NFPA 20 would have anything to with it.
I will get the square footage later when I can as I know that will most likely be a major part.
