If a switch is listed as Class I Div.I group C&D, can it be used in a Class I Div. II Group B area?

Maybe, see 500.6(A)(2) and the exceptions. If you don't meet the exception, then you can't use it. Group A and B gasses have more explosive force then Group C and D gasses, and the explosion proof devices have to have more threads or ground surfaces to make sure that the gasses exiting the enclosure after the internal explosion are cool enough so that you don't have an external explosion.

rayr,

Also check with the manufacturer of the device. I had a job which was Class 1, Div 2, Group B. We were able to use Group C listed solenoids because of the actual chemical. So, I would try and find out what is present that gives it the Group B rating and then contact the switch manufacturer and see if it is rated.
