I currently live in Connecticut and will soon become an electrical apprentice here. Does anyone know what the requirements to become a journeyman in Arizona are? My wife and I are considering moving there and I can only find info on becoming a contractor. Thanks in advance.

Re: Arizona Journeyman Requirements

Just curious, why you are moving? Are you sick of the New England weather? ;)

One thing I know for sure, if you decide to stay in Connecticut, you will be making a lot more $$ even as an apprentice than you would in Arizona. Granted, the cost of living is less in AZ.
If you stay in CT you can start at $10-11/hour and quicly work your way up if you are good. Benefits are excellent too if you find a good contractor.

I have nothing against Arizona but I have not heard good things about the work situation (wage wise and competition) in the southwest U.S.

Hey Pete,

Thanks for the heads-up about the $$$. In answer to your question, YES THE WEATHER SUCKS. I think I'm ready for a warmer climate, I'm not as resilient as I use to be. Besides, I can ride my bike year round in Arizona with no helmet.

PS: where in southern CT are you, I live in Trumbull

I'm in Guilford. So you're not that far from me.
There is tons and tons of work available right now here.

But hey, if the warm weather beckons, I say go. :) If you get sick of it out there you can always come back.

Believe me, I know how you feel. When I first went out to California I was ready to move there right away. Then I found out how expensive it is to get a place to live. That was 1998. It's only gotten much worse. :)

I'm currently taking the classroom instruction, only have 3 months left at NETI.

That was my original plan, stay here until I get my E-2 then move. Thats why I was wanting to find out the requirements for Arizona journeyman. The only thing I can find is for getting a contractors license.

I'm hoping some one here can give me some info.

Hi There,

I left CT in Sept and had multiple job offers here in AZ. I was enrolled in the apprentice program in CT for 2 years.

AZ does not have a journeyman test, similar to parts of NY you work under the contractors license.

As mentioned in a previous post the bennies are not great. I did start at $17 an hour here. I started at $15 2 years ago in CT. Can't beat the weather here...also AZ is a right-to-work state...no unions.

Hope this helps

Steve,
Thanks for the reply. That is the information I was looking for. Glad to hear that you're liking it out there. Starting next year, we are going to look for property out there. Where in AZ are you, and where would you recommend?
