When making repairs or additions to existing residences is it required to install an Ark Fault Breaker?

I better correct that REPAIRS maybe like replacing a recepticle,hardly think so, as that is maintinance

I think if you are adding a circuit you would have to comply, but in my opinion, that is where it ends. The NEC is not retro-active.

In Minnesota, for work in existing dwellings, if the opening is 125 V, 15 or 20 A, new and in the bedroom, it must be supplied from an AFCI. So, new luminaire on a new outlet, new 120 V smoke detector where there hadn't been, new receptacle outlet. . .all get AFCI, which means a homerun when it could have been a simple extension. And if the panel is a fuse center or an off brand instead of the Big Four AFCI manufacturers, then a new subpanel must be installed for the AFCI.
