Hey all,

I'm working in add on combined cycle project, the contract mentioned that all power (MV and LV) and control cables shall be armored, but the wires of the fire detection system shall be according to the NFPA.

The contractor requested to use non-armored cables in the indoor installation because he will pull the cables inside conduits.
I checked NFPA72-2014 and NFPA70-2014, but i did't find a clear
statement about pull AC cable inside conduit.

could you help and advise me?

regards

I am thinking he has a mistype because he is talking about nm in conduit.

If you mean NM cable inside conduit then it is allowed, however, why install a raceway and then use nm or is this a sleeve of conduit not a full run.

The contract specifies AC, a contractor requested a change to use NM. At least that was what I got out of it.
I did also but he asked about ac in conduit when the sentence before said nm in conduit. Either way I am obviously unsure of what he is asking.

Thanks all for quick replay,

The contract mentioned exactly:
"All medium and low voltage power and control cable shall be armored with galvanized steel
round wire armor for multicore and aluminum for single core.
Medium voltage cable shall be of a voltage class of 6/10 kV as per IEC suitable for use in a nominal 6.6 kV non-effectively grounded system having a maximum system voltage of 7.2 kV.
Low voltage cable shall be 0.6/1.0 kV grade as per IEC.
Wire for fire detection systems shall be in accordance with NFPA."

The contractor sent the following letter:

So, i checked the NFPA, and i found that nothing mentioned in NFPA70 about that the armored cable shall or can be laid in conduits
I must decide that the contractor request is approved or not

i hope that all the above information is enough

regards

I still don't completely understand what the design is asking for but, the short answer to the question of "is Armored Cable allowed in conduit" is yes. See NFPA 70 344.22 for an example.

If you did put armored cable in conduit, how would you terminate the ends? unless the conduit is just a sleeve without terminating in a box.
