Yes...were dealing with the 1ft requirement now. The majority of the commercial Installation & Design practice under the 2014 Code is to locate string inverters within 10ft of the Array to comply with Rapid Shutdown. The 1ft rule makes this practice difficult under the 2017 Code.
On residential 1&2 family dwellings for the 2017 Code, the initiation device for Rapid Shutdown must be outside at a readily accessible location per 690.12(C). The Utility required lockable disconnect in our area with visible break guts located outside will comply for the Rapid Shutdown initiation device for most systems. The Micro-Inverter or AC Module installation is once again at the top of the list to comply with Rapid Shutdown. The "SE" line of SE inverters with optimizers meets the Rapid Shutdown requirements if located outside because you need to shut off the DC switch on the inverter to meet the 30/30 rule. The newer SE HD-Wave can be located inside the dwelling because it meets the 30/30 rule with shutdown of AC to the unit.
