Another thread by kriverswaters presented a new question for me.
When we have one building serving a second, Art 225.32 requires a disconnect at the second building, HOWEVER, there is an exception for "installations under single management with safe-switching procedures, etc".
If a facility meets the requirements for the exception, then can one assume the disconnecting means in the second building does not have to meet the requirements of 225.33, 34, 36, etc.?

I will say that it dose have to meet the other requirements. I see the exception applying to only 225.32 as in relation to the location of the disconnect.

I was thinking along those lines also, but the "required" disconnect would be in the 1st bldg :D.

Kriverwaters post made me think about a MCC in a second building at an industrial facility that meet the exception. Does that mean the MCC would have to be service rated and have no more than 6 disconnecting means or does that apply to the "required" disconnect that, by exception, is in the 1st building.

You guys are REALLY confusing me: The proposed 250 Amp MCC, with up to twelve motor controls, is to be located "outside", (Nema 3), 180', from the warehouse where it is to be fed from. This is an industrial application.

Don't mean to confuse you, but there are "questions" which might be viewed differently by various AHJs
The best solution is a "main", but since your facility meets the requirements of the exception, the main can be remote.
But, as noted, there are other requirements such as those in 225.33 and 225.36.
With 12 controllers I doubt your MCC is listed as service and it obviously has more than 6 disc. means.
My opinion would be you need a main at the MCC, but depending on the interpretation we are discussing your AHJ may not require one,

Thank you for your response. I am not really "that" confused. Just a figure of speech. The MCC is not Service Entrance Rated. I will plan on installing a non-fusable, Nema 3, 480 Volt, 400 Amp rated dis-connect next to the MCC. Unless otherwise stated, this seems like the practical, safe way for this application.

O.K. let me muddy that water a bit :D
(a)Is the non-fusible switch "service rated" as required by 225.36 ?
(b)Most if not all non-fusible swithes have an AIC rating of 10k.
Is this adequate for the supply ?
