Is anyone aware of any options for the type of allowable floor covering when using undercarpet, type FCC cable? I know the NEC specifically say's "carpet squares", but with all of the new rubber backed flooring systems that are available today you would think that there would be some options other than carpet. I'm asking about the floor covering specifically because we have a retail client that absolutely will not consider using carpet in the area that would be an ideal location for the undercarpet wiring system. Does anyone know if any other types of floor covering have ever been submitted to the NFPA/NEC for approval to use with FCC cable systems?

TJ, I think the concern is a combination of protection and access. What other floor covering would provide both?

Is there no under-floor access?

In this particular area, there is no under floor access and the client isn't interested in changing the current design to allow for any type of raised floor (we investigated this option as part of our research). We have been looking at some different types of recycled rubber flooring and a new type of tile squares with either rubber backing or underlayment which could be installed as "square's" that would make the install similar to the carpet square's that are available.

If this is a concrete floor, I would cut a slot in the floor, lay in some PVC with stub-ups, and patch the concrete.

Note: this will not be a dry location. If it's a sleeve, use UF in the PVC; as a box-to-box wiring method, use THWN.
