The nameplate on an air handler reads min. circuit ampacity 50A max 70A. The question is do I have to size the conductors according to the maximum or can I size them anywhere in the range between 50 and 70A. Please back up your reply with a code article.

Conductor at least MCA, and breaker (or fuses, if spec'ed) no larger than MOCP.

That means you can use #6 or #8 wire, depending on type, and a 70a breaker.

I would think that the 50A is the minimum circuit ampacity ( conductor size ) and the 70A is the maximum fuse size. Look at 430.52 since an air handler is a motor load. Size the conductors to a 50A load.
