Art. 725.55

HI Guys:
Is this article telling me that I can run a 120vac urd with a shielded CL2 RS485 (+15 to -15 dc) together in 4 inch rigid?
Thanks

Re: Art. 725.55

725.55 Separation from Electric Light, Power, Class 1, Non?Power-Limited Fire Alarm Circuit Conductors, and Medium Power Network-Powered Broadband Communications Cables.
(A) General. Cables and conductors of Class 2 and Class 3 circuits shall not be placed in any cable, cable tray, compartment, enclosure, manhole, outlet box, device box, raceway , or similar fitting with conductors of electric light, power, Class 1, non?power-limited fire alarm circuits, and medium power network-powered broadband communications circuits unless permitted by 725.55(B) through (J).
Which of the installations "...permitted by 725.55(B) through (J)" would lead you to believe you could "...run a 120vac urd with a shielded CL2 RS485 (+15 to -15 dc) together in 4 inch rigid?"

If you use UF for the 120, then 725.55(J)(1) will permit the installation. I don't think that this is a good idea, but it is ok per the code.

Don, I have to disagree with you on this one; as described, that still puts them in the "same raceway" which is a general prohibition. The only installation I can think of that (J) actually applies to is a messenger-wire installation.

Re: Art. 725.55

BTW I have proposed in the past and will probably propose again that "cable tray" be deleted from 725.55(A) and (H) be deleted all together so that (J) applies to cable tray applications. I think under the new management (CMP3) there's a shot. There has never been a legitimate "safety" reason to do anything else.

Bob,
The way I read it, (J) applies to everything listed in (A) and acts as an exception.

Re: Art. 725.55

I did battle with the old jurisdiction (CMP16) and (H) was added precisely because I applied what became (J) to cable trays.

Re: Art. 725.55

I want this installation to be safe and to code.
If I run 120vac on uf through 1/2" liquidtight through the same 20' length of 4" rigid as the cl2 rs485 cable and secured both ends of the liquidtight within 12" of exiting the 4" rigid, would this be a safe solution?

Thanks,

AL
