I am working on a job where we are replacing feeders and panels in an area where there are foreign systems (hot water piping) above where they want to replace the panels.

Article 110.26-F-1-b states you can have these systems there as long as you provide "protection".

Protection in my mind would be some custom fabricated sheet metal that makes a trench to carry water and have it sloped away to the other side of the room.

Am I anywhere close with this thought?

Thanks.

Check with your "AHJ" They may want some type of "listed" pan in use with HVAC equipment, but one never knows. I would accept it but thats me.

I think any kind of drip pan would be fine - I don't even know if such things are listed. But do be aware that the foreign pipes have to be at least six feet above the tops of the panels, no matter where in the middle you put the drip pans.

i had to replace an existing 600a board at a school. they waived the clearance above but did require the drip pan due to the existing foreign systems above.sprinkler and steam pipes .
