Article 300: How to support data/telephone if not on grid support wires?

I have been working outside the industry for a couple of years and was encouraged by my director to help out (design) with the data/phone cabling of our new building. After all the meetings, design work, quotes for parts, etc, I was contacted by the GC that it was time to install my support system.

Support system? I informed him that in all the other buildings in the area that I had done in the past, I always supported my cabling with j-hooks suspended from the ceiling grid support wires. He said that according to the NEC article 300.11, I can't do that anymore.

I contacted my parts vendors to see if this was true and they were unable to supply me with a positive yes or no answer. I am unable to find anything on the internet that I can quote to the GC. Is this true?

Some articles say install your own support wire, but the GC told me they would have to be fastened to the grid, what's the difference?

I am always careful not to disturb the height of the ceiling, but this building has a 25 foot airspace above the drop-tile ceiling. It will be costly for me to run allthread or gridwire of that length.

I saw in an article on the Mike Holt website the following phrase, "Article 300 contains the general requirements for all wiring methods included in the NEC. However, this article doesn't apply to signaling and communications systems, which are covered in Chapters 7 and 8, except as specifically referenced in those chapters."

Does this help? Can someone give me a black and white answer? Please help.
Thanks!
