I have a detail on a plan that is calling for " rigid PVC conduit". Is type
RNC (article 352) and "rigid PVC conduit" the same? Is there anyway that "rigid PVC conduit" could mean Robroy conduit? Thank you

I don't think so...
352.2 Definition.
Rigid Nonmetallic Conduit (RNC).
A nonmetallic raceway of circular cross section, with integral or associated couplings, connectors, and fittings for the installation of electrical conductors.

Robroy is PVC coated RMC, right?

I have always called Robroy EPOXY coated rigid.
The term RNC could include fiberglass and ABS as well as PVC.

So all rigid PVC is RNC, but not all RNC is rigid PVC.

In that same vein (and because I was talking to someone yesterday about fiberglass conduit)

The 2001 UL General Information Directory (White Book) describes three types of rigid nonmetallic conduit recognized for use in the NEC, as described in the following extract.
(1) Rigid nonmetallic Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 PVC conduit (DZYR)
(2) Rigid nonmetallic underground conduit, plastic (EAZX)
(3) Rigid nonmetallic fiberglass conduit (DZKT)
(Commentary following 352.2 in the '02 NECH)

PVC is included in RNC-- Is PVC Rigid--Yes, Is it nonmetallic--- yes, and is it conduit--yes. There may be other RNC's but I believe PVC is a RNC.

Sorry Celtic-- I should have known that's what you meant. I never paid attention to the second question in the original post.

No big deal... :)

Certainly coated RMC couldn't be a non metallic conduit. And where did the name Robroy come from?

This issue will be cleared up in the 2008 NEC. There will be three different types of RNC. Each will be identified as RNC in their definition (.2) and construction (.100).

Article 352 Rigid Polyvinyl Chloride Conduit: Type PVC (Renamed in 2008)

Article 353 High Density Polyethylene Conduit: Type HDPE Conduit (New in 2005)

Article 355 Reinforced Thermosetting Resin Conduit: Type RTRC (New in 2008)
