My company just got "popped" by the UL guy about using the flourescent fixtures as a wireway. I was just wandering if there could be a possible code change in this, since 90% of the people probably do use it for a wireway. I mean you still have power on the conductors that enter into the fixture.

Could you explain your installation in more detail? It's hard to decipher exactly what you have installed.

Welcome to the forum.

There is no 410.31 in the 08 NEC (probably an 05 NEC) however, if we stay within the confines of 410.64 and 410.65 of the 08, then we are perfectly legal. Anyone have an 05 handy to see what the section numbers are in cross reference?

Thanks Infinity

Thanks Infinity

We build "pre-wired electrical modules" with all the switch gear equipment with transformers and panels for the lighting controls and other branch circuits for shopping centers to save there floor space.

Look at 410.31 and .32 in the 2002 and 2005 codes or 410-31 and its exceptions in the 1999. I think the 99 version, with the exceptions, is much better code writing than is the current wording. With the current wording, after you read the .64 or .31 section as the case may be, you have found your answer and have no need to read the .65 or .32 sections that really act as exceptions, so the permission to use the fixture as a raceway is missed by many. All of this information will be in a single section in the 2011 code.

Thanks Don, I appreciate the help on everything that everyone has posted. I guess the reasoning for this question was to find out why you go into just about any Wal-Mart or just about any other open ceiling establishment there is not a j-box next to a 8 ft fixture, they are butted together and a peice f pipe or flex in the end of the run.
