Can anyone tell me when it was first required (in the NEC) that the branches of the essential electrical system by separated from each other? I think it was 1999 but I don't have a copy of anything older than 2005. I have had several clients get frustrated when I tell them that to add a receptacle to the emergency system will require a complete rework of at least part of the there electrical system to get L&I approval.

It goes back to at least the 1990 cycle which is the earliest edition I have in front of me right now.

This section kills me. There's no grandfathering for older hospitals so I feel like every hospital renovation job I do is against code the minute I touch the emergency system.
