Following the NEC 1999, can these cables be installed in a structure taller than 3 stories, as NM cable is not permiteded in this type of structure exceeding 3 floors [336-5(a)(1)].
In another words, does fire alarm circuits (not in raceway) require compliance with NM installation standards?
If compliance with 336 is not required, then how often does the cable have to be supported (article please?)?

First off, NM cable is allowed in buildings exceeding 3 floors, depending on the building classification type, per the 2002 NEC.
There is no distance on the support required.
NPLFA is basically a 120V wiring method and must be run in raceway. PLFA is typically run in cable.
But local codes and regulations often have restrictions on type of installation.

In NY State, we still follow the 1999 electrical code, which has a limitation on the height of the building.
336-18 determines the distance between supports. I am trying to establish whether fire alarm cable gets installed per NM installation standards or which. Clearly an inspector wouldn't allow 30' between supports as it enters a smoke detector backbox.

If cable is run between smoke detectors, is there any code that would require cable support, other than that at the smoke detector backboxes, 30' apart?

There are not specific distance limits on cable support for FA cable in the NEC. It has to be supported by approved methods so the cable will not be damaged.
