One of the questionds I see frequently on the forum is "the inspector says I can't ....", without any written documentation on the violation section of the NEC.

I've yet to see Art 80 quoted on this forum, of course many agencies don't use it. But in a case as above, we could quote section 80.19 (F)Inspection and Approvals,(5):
If, upon inspection, any installation is found not to be fully in conformity with the provisions of Article 80, and all applicable ordinances, rules, and regulations, the Inspector making the inspection shall at once forward to the person, firm, or corporation making the installation a written notice stating the defects that have been found to exist.

Re: Article 80 for violations

Tom, I think Article 80 is almost never used. Most areas already adopt the NEC with their own laws and ordnances so Article 80 is moot. Only in areas that wish to adopt but have not yet, Article 80 would provide a great framework to begin with or even used in its entirety. :)

Not only is Article 80 not used in most areas, it cannot be used unless specifically adopted by the local jurisdiction ( see the note following the title of Article 80).

In most cases, local jurisdictions use similiar wording, so a reading of the local rules will get basically the same wording that you quote out of Article 80.

Don't most inspectors write out a inspection report, listing violations?

I agree the AHJ should write out the violation, but some of the posts state they don't get the written notice. Even though Art 80 is seldom adopted, we could mention it as a guide to proper enforcement.
