I am currently the State Inspector on a large building project. We are using a second inspector for "back-up" input. He is questioning the reliability of Asco 917 lighting contactors.

Has anyone heard of problems or have any comments regarding these contactors.

Thanks for the input !

I don't know about that specific contactor, but have high regards for the Asco products I've seen and used.

Please don't take this wrong but is it really the inspectors duty to question a product if it is third party listed and is designed for that particular application?

We have installed them in various commercial spaces with great success over the past 10 or so years. They seem highly reliable since they are electrically operated and mechanically held. This means that the coil is only energized while opening or closing the contacts. My biggest complaint is the price. If I remember correctly a 12 pole contactor is about $450.

Please, take this the right way - your job has nothing to do with "how reliable" you think listed equipment is.

Isn't this between the customer, engeneer, and the electrician? Why would you be inspecting for "reliability"?

BTW, welcome! Good to see another Baltimoron!

Right here.
The ASCO lighting contactors are the Cadillac of lighting contactors, in my opinion. Certainly one of the most popular, if not the single most popular.

I am not the one questioning the reliability of this particular product. Frankly, I don't care what product is used for a particular application as long as all necessary requirements are met such as UL aproved, NEC compliance etc..

As my post mentioned there is a third party inspection team ( a minority contractor-this is a state project) who feels the need to report SOMETHING and this was one of his comments(ASCO). I am merely looking to refute his claims.
I do not take your comments the wrong way, I am only only looking for input.

Thanks,
JM
