Hi,

Do you think that use of lighting contactors and time clock to turn ltg.cont. on/off and "normal" lighting switches will meet the ASHRAE code? It is much cheaper solution than Lutron or Wattstoper lighting control panels..
Thanks,
Mike

Re: ASHRAE and lighting contactors

Well sort of. It works fine except for the requirement that every space must have a switch that can override the time clock. Sorry I can't quote the code exactly from home.

Lithonia and wattstopper make a switch that will kill power to the lights automatically if you cycle the lighting contactor off for 5 seconds or so. This way the lighting circuits are energized all the time but the local switches all turn off when the contactor cycles power. If someone needs to override, just go in the room and flip the switch lights come on.

Here's another idea instead of the time clock, tie the contactor to the Buildings HVAC energy management system. Now when building is unoccupied, lights automatically get cycled, and it can be programmed to repeat the cycle every few hours.

Research the switches and you'll see there are some downsides like the price $50, and the fact that you cant really do 3 way correctly. But it will meet code.
