Assumption

Although I am all for licensed and Insured contractors, I do not like the fact that people assume that it will always mean good quality workmanship. I have seen many instances where a L&I contractor will have incredibly bad workmanship that amazes me how it ever passed inspection. At the same time, I have seen some pretty amazing work out of someone that has no license at all. I know its up to IAG's to check out the work according to code, they have to stop where the code stops. I wish that there were a way to indicate the quality of workmanship. Afterall, most of the work an electrician does is hidden by walls and panel covers when the work is done.

I agree that a license does not ensure quality work, nor do all inspections. But IMO both of those items make it more likely the job will at least be done safely.

The NEC is neither a design manual nor a workmanship standard and I hope it never becomes one. It is what is considered the minimum for safety, a customer can chose to write specifications that speak to the quality of any installation.:)

Thier's a bad apple in every group. Fact is however, in most states working as an unlicensed electrician is illegal.
Some consider that some one willing to break the law MAY have lower morals.

In many parts of PA all you need is a contractors liscense, which entails going down to the town hall paying a fee and putting the sticker on your vehicle. And on the inspection side of things even a good inspector is human, on commercial jobs the inspector would go and check a few boxes make sure the bonding screw was in and that cables were secure and had an red devil in the mc. (among other parts of the job). I often wondered if they were suppose to check every opening. They did charge partly by a certain amount of them.

When I did my Apprent. the Journeyman and Masters were sticklers and they taught us the right way and always said with experience will come speed and eventually you will just do it and it will always be done with the kinda workmanship you develop at that stage. So, it kinda falls on us to pass it on.

Ill get off the soap box now
