We are installing a 1000kw generator and are considering adding an ATS from automatic switchover. Without the ATS, a manual breaker would need to be switched to the generator to supply backup power.

NEC 701.5 a reads "Transfer equipment, including ATS's, shall be automatic..."

Is my interpretation correct that the generator will require an ATS or other method of automatic transfer instead of a manual switchover?

Please provide feedback. Thanks

At a 1,000 KW I highly doubt it is an article 700 or 701 installation.

It is much more likely it is an article 702 optional standby installation which means a manual transfer method is allowed.
