I am installing a 200amp main breaker transfer switch for a generac outside next to the meter could I just consider this my equipment disconnect and run 3 wire se cable to a 200 amp main breaker panel so I wouldn't have to relocate the ge and separate the neutrals?

Why are you trying to avoid running 4 wires to the panel and separating the neutrals and grounds?

I guess just more work and know I have to rerun the grounding electrodes or make an irreversible splice cause they won't be long enough

Also no. The main breaker in the ATS will become the service disconnect, and the interior must be wired as a sub-panel.

To add: Yes, the electrode connections should be relocated to the ATS, and the green jumper should remain in place.

The grounding electrode is in the main panel currently but the new install will have the ats outside by the meter

I guess in the past where I've had se feeding a dryer and I upgraded the service my meter combo disconnect was used as a equipment disconnect and I was able to run se from the meter disconnect to the main panel and keep my grounding electrode in the panel and do my bond there

you may consider just dropping a new (or two) grounding electrode next to the meter if routing the existing GEC is going to be trouble, and disconnect/abandon the old electrodes & GEC.

Thanks for the reply's thinking about it know I understand why my main panel has to be a subpanel cause the circuit to my generator ground would have to bond there at the transfer switch

Under 230.85(3) of the 2020 NEC it may be permitted considering that transfer switch is SUSE rated. This is what continuing education providers are saying in the 15-hour classes. Label the transfer switch EMERGENCY DISCONNECT / NOT SERVICE EQUIPMENT and OK to run 3-wire inside to the existing Main Panel.

Issue with the arrangement with 3-wire SEU into the Main Panel is the generator is wired with a 4-wire feeder... and the equipment grounding conductor would see objectional current flow. There also needs to be a bond (neutral to ground) at the Main Panel and the Transfer Switch according to 250.25

Gushud- I happy to see you identified the issue.

I hope that in 2023, CMP-10 removes 230.85(2) and (3)…leave 230.85(1)

While some mfg may have a Gen/ATS combo that would meet the ED/NSE criteria, my Generac Rep says their equipment does not. Both their styles, either service rated or non service rated ATS require 4 wire connections to the breaker panel.

That's good to hear. The service rated transfer switches are listed as "Suitable for Use as Service Equipment".
