Hello all,
I have a question pertaining to generators and ATS, I?ve done a lot of hospital work where we use multiple ATS and separate the loads: For example 1 ATS for Life safety loads, 1 ATS for Critical load and 1 ATS for mechanical equipment and then you also have your normal power. I?m aware of that requirement, but for an office building do you still have to have separate ATS for life safety loads and non life safety loads (ex. egress lighting FA equipment) or can 1 ATS support the entire building. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

If you have an Article 700 system for emerg. lighting the ATS can only supply Article 700 loads per 700.5(D). If you want to supply optional loads per Article 702 you could use the same generator but would need a separate transfer switch and wiring.

Some one please correct me if I am wrong. If it is deemed as a optional system by the AHJ and the FA and emergency lighting has battery back up then two transfer switches would not be needed.

Correct but I get the impression there are no battery lighting units.

In my area we are allowed, if not required to put the FA system on the emergency system.

You are correct there are no batteries for em lights - so it sounds like 2 ATS are required 1 for EM lights and one for optional gen circuits
