Hey bryan, I have a few questions for you. I'd send PM but i figured some other people might want to know the answer to this as well. I have a contractor that wants me to come down into florida for spec homes and some condos. I'm looking at florida's licensing page and have a question about class codes. I have a GA non-restricted; Closest thing appears to be FL EC license, however the GA LVU license is required as well to reciprocate for that license. FL class ER is for residential; would i be allowed to be the EC on the condos w/ that license? If no, would a specialty, class ES, license be applicable for me? I know i should call FL but its the weekend so i thought i'd just get your input on it since it'll be a couple of days before their office is open again. Thanks, B.

If your comming to Florida to work, you had better be well heeled. Work is almost at a stand still in the residential market. Comercial is doing well. As for your license, EC in Florida is Electric Certified. With this you can work in any county by just showing them your card and proof of insurance. ER is Electric Registered. You must take a test in each County or City and pay losts of money ($100.00 last I knew.) every year on top of the State requirements. Some counties and citys will reciprocate with others. Some will only accept the EC licence. Both Er and Ec will allow you to do both residential and Comercial. Hope this helps

thanks for the reply. the only reason i'd be coming is for one particular contractor. he's building 50 tract homes and i think it was somewhere around 300 condo units. i haven't seen any plans or submitted a bid; i just started working w/ this GC this year and was asked the other day if i would be willing to do his work in FL. i still have to submit a bid and they have to accept it before anything happens, but i figured i might as well go ahead and start the licensing process because its hard to put a bid on something you can't legally do. i've gotten a couple of other calls in recent months to come to tallahassee so even if this doesn't work out i might could use it anyway.

Sorry for the slow response. I reeived my 2008 NEC a couple weeks back and have been diligently updating my courses, notes, highlights, ect. thus I have been neglecting the Forum.

Cavie pretty much sumed it up. Go back to the DBPR - ECLB webpage and download a copy of the "Know Your Scope" document. It sums up exactly what type of work is permitted under all license categories.

Considering the whole picture, I strongly advise you work on getting the EC license. All others have strict limitations and cost nearly the same to maintain, if not more.

If you are able to qualify for reciprocity, then go for it. It is not granted all that often. You may end up having to sit for the exam, so be prepared for that task.

If you are having troubles with the licensing board and/or understanding Florida laws and rules, contact a support organization such as the Electrical Council of Florida. They have programs and people availble to assist you with these problems and questions.

So I see thats 2 now that have the 08. How did you get it so quickly?

And brantmacga, as Cavie stated that market is dead here now. This is a new GC. Be carefull. The north Fla. market has alot of contractors that can under bid you. They get cheap labor. Scary!

i realize that's what i should have but i have to have two GA licenses to get it, one, the LVU license i do not have. I have to find an LVU contractor (we have about 5 in an area of 150k residents) and one of them has to be willing to sign me off to take the test. but that's a story for another day. i guess i didn't read hard enough through the website as i couldn't find whether the multi-family dwellings were allowed under ER. thanks for the reply though. thanks for the tips chris; i haven't decided for sure if i'm going even give the guy a price yet. some projects i've been working on at home are coming together and i may be too slammed to even take on the extra workload.
