What is the requirement for Audible Fire Alarm devices in conference rooms. Is there a specific requirement OR is it just that room needs to have 15dB over ambient just like all other occupied spaces?

Would you typically put one in or would if there is one in the hallway outside the conference room, would you simply put in a visual only appliance?

Does the occupancy type factor in?

Thanks,

Mike

A conference room can be considered a public space and IMO requires audible as well as visual notification. Even if there is a device directly outside the conference room door(s), you are unlikely to meet the +15db requirement, even with the device set at 99 db. I've done the measurements. There is no special requirement for this kind of space, and the general building occupancy doesn't affect the design in this case.

Since it is a short hop from "conference room" to "classroom" I will say that my answer is different in the latter case. My feeling, and I've never had an AHJ buck me on it, is that for the teacher to supervise an orderly evacuation he or she needs to be heard by the students. It's usually plenty noisy enough once they get their charges into the hallway.
