I will be working on an Auto Body Repair Shop Building Addition. I was going to just match the existing electrical installation, but got to thinking about hazardous location classifications. I don't have a lot of experience with hazardous locations and want to make sure I make the right choice on the installation. Anyone help direct me to the right code reference?

Have you read 511? If so you probally have more specific questions. If not read it and let us know.

I have read through 511... What got the most of my attention is 511.12 and the use of GFCI's for personnel. In the existing building, there are not GFCI's anywhere. I can only assume the inspector looked at and allowed it... I just don't want to have to do anything twice. As I said before, I have not had much experience with Classified Locations and it has been a very long time since I first learned about it. I am even having a hard time figureing out what Class of Location it even is.

511.12 is one sentence, very clear.

What part of 511.3 do you feel your install will fall under?
 
My best guess would be 511.3(A)(6). I also read on and it seems to me the location would not be required to fall under 511.3(B)(2) or (B)(4)
 
Hello... I have a question that I am trying to find an answer too.

Here is the scene.... Commerical garage (pretty large - about 25ft high and 150x150 with other 'dept' on the sides of this 150x150) that have offices which are free standing with completely seperate intake and exhaust inside the main garage area. Would the the inside of these offices be required to have any and all outlets (120v and data) above the 18inch area. After looking at 511.3(A)(3) I think the inside of these offices would be considered unclassified loactions.

any inputs would be great.
 
youre right traderx. the inside of those offices can be unclassified as long as the air changes 4 or more times an hour and are seperated by walls. just make sure that any gas vapors leaking out are unlikely
