I drilled into a plaster wall in a customer's condo 11 times. The 12th time I partially severed a bx cable. The drilled hole acted as a barrel to direct the sparks out horizontally. Very impressive. . .

Supposedly the varying density of plaster makes most wire finders unreliable.

Does anyone know of a commercially available device that shuts off an electric drill if you hit metal?

And, is anyone interested in a free, untested schematic for one of these shutoff gadgets that acts in a few milliseconds if the drill bit hits a grounded or energized (at 120v) conductor? Parts cost from Hosfelt.com or a similar place is about $20, and labor to assemble, troubleshoot & test is probably a few hours. (I'm not affiliated with Hosfelt).

That was the fastest reply I ever got. Are you in the next room?

He wanted to mount a huge plastic sheet over an Indian blanket that hung on the wall to prevent his two cats from scratching the blanket.

Looks like it would have been cheaper to get rid of the cats...

They already make these. The product is called Drillstop, or something like that. The termite guys use these on their drills when they're drilling holes in foundations to inject termite juice. Stops the drill the instant the bit touches a pipe, wire, or whatever. Let me see if I can scare up a link...

wow, they should sell them to the phone and catv company since they love to send a bit through SEC's....

Won't do much good on NM cable. By the time it shuts off the cable will have already been compromised.

Yeah, that's why romex should be banned from society. People and their overwhelming need to drill into walls at the drop of a hat.

I am!

Thanks for the link

I figured someone, somewhere, makes or did make this thing.

This trips faster (it might be all solid-state) than my version, and the box is about 2x or 3x the volume of what it would take to hold the parts for mine.
I don't guess the inventor will show me a schematic. . .

I'm waiting for a call back on the price.
