There are 12 car lifts being wired at a local dealrship. Each motor is a 2hp 208 , intermittant duty with no thermal protection. What I read in art.430 is that the motor feeds may actually be rated as low as 85% of the rating, depending on the actual time duty of the motor. Also that the circuit breaker may be used for the thermal protection as long as it doesn't exceed 250%. Is this an accurate interpretation?

A 2HP, 1PH, 208V motor is 12 amps, so I doubt if the 85% rating means too much. As far as overload protection, 430.42 requires overload protection per 430.32. You could argue that 430.32 is for continuous duty motors and does not apply, by would probably lose the arguement. By 430.102, you need a disconnect within sight of the controller, why not a fused disconnect?

Recently have run power to several such lifts. In my case, the lifts had vertical pillars, and were powered from above.
Where the lift was near a wall, I was able to mount a disconnect. Where the lift was not near a wall, I used a cord & plug (twist-lock) for the disconnect means.
Since the steel frame will move some when under load, I interrupted my pipe run with a short piece of flex. Of course, this meant that I had to run a ground wire.
