Autotransformer - Medium Voltage Distribution

To All.

I went to a transformer protection seminar the other day. For the transformer types shown one of them was an autotransformer. Can anyone tell me why an autotransformer would be used for medium voltage distribution as opposed to a typical 3-Phase transformer. Also advantages/disadvantages of using an autotransformer in a medium voltage distribution application.

The disadvantage is that a fault on the secondary is also a fault on the primary.
