My customer has a lawn mowing business new building and wants me to wire for a future welder, but he cannot give me amperage. He doesn't know anything about welders. (I don't either) I told him I need to know so I can install the proper wire size. He has a brand new building, and rents half out to another lawn business. He wants a welder in each bay. Is a 30 amp a common size ?

Depends on what kind of welder, most common wire fed are just 20 amp 120 volt. If it is an old fashion stick welder, the most common is 50 amp 240 volt. He probably needs to get with his maintenance person to find out what they use.

"Standard" welding receptacle is 6-50R. This is 50 amp 240 volt single phase. Most every welder sold that is above the 20 amp 120 volt range has this mating plug. Not that the MIG and/or TIG welders need 50 amps like the old Lincoln tombstones, but it is a "standard".

Welders can be all over the place, from little units that plug in a standard 120v receptacle to some like my 350 amp motor generator units that came with the building and are hard wired in. But I think for a lawn mower shop a 6-50R would cover anything they might do
