Aviation Obstruction Lighting

I had thought that there was a requirement under the NEC for strobes to be installed on tall structures. I looked but can't find anything about it. Am I looking in the wrong place? Is there NOT a requirement to install obstruction lighting?

Not an NEC issue, that would be FAA rules.

I seem to recall reading that anything 200ft and over has to have obstruction lights, which is why radio amateurs have antennas at 195 feet...

I believe it is in E9 in the faa manual.

Correct, over 200 must have lights on top with side marker lights.

It will also be dependent on how close to the airport you are.

It has a height of no more than 35' and has marker lights.

I spent the day replacing a tower light choke on an AM tower that's 176 feet tall...it's a couple of miles from the town airport, so it gets lights. Radio and TV station tower light requirements become part of the operating license, so if you screw up, both the FCC and FAA lay the hammer on you.

It's not an NEC rule, it's FAA rule.
As far as where and how tall and what type, it depends on proximity to airports and traffic lanes. Some buildings require only a night light, others closer to traffic lanes, require dual lights.
