Is it a code requirement to install back boxes for flush mounted fire alarm devices in ceilings or walls? I know that if the wall or ceiling is rated then it is a definite requirement, but beyond the rating is it required? There are a couple of articles that I think are pertinent.
110.3(B) Installation and Use
Listed or labeled equipment shall be installed and used in accordance with any instructions included in the listing or labeling.
760.130(B)(1) Exposed or Fished in Concealed Spaces
In raceway or exposed on the surface of ceiling and sidewalls or fished in concealed spaces, cable splices or terminations shall be made in listed fittings, boxes, enclosures, fire alarm devices, or utilization equipment.

Aloha

I suppose that if the installation instructions on a device didn't include the type of back box(es) to be used, you could hang 'em "naked", but every device I've ever seen tells you to use a 4" square, or octogon, or something. So the practical answer is "yes", back boxes are required.
