I have read it as well. It is not in the NEC. I believe I read it in the instructions that come with the boxes. 3M makes a product that takes care of this. It is similar to Play-Do that you can mold on the rear of the boxes to seal the knock outs and wire penetrations.

I have never seen an electrical inspector pick this up, however I have seen the fire inspectors getting it.

The NEC does not totally ignore it. 300.21 FPN directs you to Building and Fire Codes for box penetrations in fire-rated walls,
