Backlit Kitchen Countertops

Has anyone ever installed lighting to backlight a kitchen countertop? I'm wondering what's involved with installing the back lights. I've I stalled some LED sheets in a commercial ceiling coves and I'm wondering if a similar product is used. I've seen some companies that offer custom LED underlight panels but the prices seem very high up to $200 per square foot which is double the cost of the actual countertop material.

There are products out there for this purpose but the problem I see is how to back light the part that extends past the cabinets. Lights under there will definitely light below also

Typically the plywood decking extends beyond the cabinets to support the overhanging portion. There is usually additionally steel brackets in the decking or corbels below to provide additional support. The stone would fracture if it didn't have support.

I have done it before for small bathrooms but can't remember the product we used. It was custom made for the top of the cabinet. I know it was not cheap.
 
Apparently you also need space between the light sources and the stone to allow the typical point sources to diffuse.

It would probably be easier to go with some sort of cultured stone that has phosphor and radium mixed in :) :) :)

That ain't cheap. 20" by 10" and it's $250. That less than 2'x 1' or less than 2 sq.ft
 
The island is going to be about 10' 6" X 5' or about 52.5 square feet. At $50/sq ft that light panel will cost almost as much as the island countertop. I did see one company that made a complete custom panel with a diffuser that goes under the stone. I was looking at these also:
