GM,

I have a customer who wants me to install poles for string lights she wants to have over her patio. Currently, there is nothing to attached the lights to. Any recommendations?

Thanks for the help

Too many variables and not much info provided.

Anything wood <6" nominal is going to warp.

Not sure what her budget is or how redneck she's willing to go do save a buck.

Patio implies nothing overhead. How high do you want to go?

Are these $50 worth of china string lights or $5,000 worth of something nice?

How long does it need to last? Will the string lights withstand a snow load and wind?

I'd just shop online for light poles. Find something you like (she likes) and see if you can source it or something similar locally.

mgookin, thanks for the response.

1. How high do you want to go? about 10 ft

2. Are these $50 worth of china string lights or $5,000 worth of something nice? $50 string lights

How long does it need to last? Will the string lights withstand a snow load and wind? As long as possible and yes withstand wind and snow.

She is looking for something not that expensive. I was thinking of using 10ft pieces of 3/4 rigid conduit and driving them into the ground and strapping the wire on top-little on the red neck side.

Depending on the ground conditions, you'll want 3' or more of burial. You'll need longer poles.

i recommend that the poles be securely fastened in the ground, and high enough so that the droop in strings dont hang too low.

In aerial construction, that's called the sag, right? Anyone?

I remember in college I was putting up holiday decorations in the bar I worked in and a guy who was then vice president of the company today known as Mas-Tech (big utility contractor on the east coast if not beyond) was there jokingly criticizing my "aerial construction".

I have lights like that strung up over my deck. I used 1X2's zip tied to the rail and the tree that comes up through the middle of the deck. The 1X2's are a bit warped, but so what? Does that make me a redneck? :D

Well I was thinking rebar but didn't want to say that.
