I saw this in the news. It doesn't surprise me. I don't want to stir up a debate on the war, but rather one on maybe Iraq should consider adopting some standards or hiring new contractors; ditto for the US effort over there.

"Report: Danger from electrical work in Iraq severe
AP News
Friday, July 18, 2008

Inferior electrical work by private contractors on U.S. military bases in Iraq is more widespread than the Pentagon has acknowledged, according to a published report.

A Senate panel investigating the electrocutions of Americans on bases in Iraq was told last week by former KBR Inc. electricians that the contractor used employees with little electrical expertise to supervise subcontractors in Iraq and hired foreigners who couldn't speak English. The Pentagon has said 13 Americans have been electrocuted in Iraq since September 2003. It has ordered Houston-based KBR to inspect all the facilities it maintains in Iraq for electrical hazards.

The New York Times reported on its Web site Thursday night that many more people have been injured, some seriously, by shocks, according to internal Army documents. A log compiled this year at one building complex in Baghdad disclosed that soldiers complained of receiving electrical shocks in their living quarters almost daily, the paper reported.

During just one six-month period _ August 2006 through January 2007 _ at least 283 electrical fires destroyed or damaged American military facilities in Iraq, including the military's largest dining hall in the country, according to the documents obtained by the Times.

An Army survey issued in February 2007 said electrical problems were the most urgent noncombat safety hazard for soldiers in Iraq.

KBR, which is responsible for providing basic services, including housing, for American troops in Iraq, said last week that its investigation had not turned up evidence of a link between its work and the electrocutions. The Army report, however, said KBR did its own study and found a "systemic problem" with electrical work, according to the Times."

I Testified At These Hearings

I Testified At These Hearings

I was one of the former KBR electricians that testified at the Senate Democratic Policy Committee Hearings on ?Contractor Misconduct and the Electrocution Deaths of American Soldiers in Iraq? on Friday, July 11, 2008

I have been blogging about this and have posted the testimony of each witness, video clips and pics from the hearing. Plus the most accurately news articles.

My blog started as a personal blog but for the last few weeks it's been all about KBR and the hearings.

There are a lot of rumors out there. Please take the time to read the testimony and know the truth. This KBR BS has got to stop.

Please take the time to read the comments. A lot of former and current KBR employees are telling there stories. If you are former or current KBR please tell me your story (nightmare). Everyone feel free to comment.

This is the link to my "KBR-Senate Hearings Category" it will get you past all my grandson/daughter/husband blogs.

Thank you.

Not only for your honesty but your efforts to support our country as well. Realize that what you did was above and beyond your call of duty.

You have made a difference. Whether big or small will remain to be seen, but you can sleep at night knowing you did the right thing. It's their ball now. Thanks for sharing this with us.

My best,

thanks for posting ms sparky, and thanks for being a good citizen There's no way to combat greed if people don't speak up about it; and that kind of corporate greed is the most insidious and despicable.

cheers & keep up the good work

It Only Seems To Get Better

It Only Seems To Get Better

Yesterday the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform held a hearing with regards to the shoddy electrical work in Iraq. It was quite humerous and ended with KBR blaming the Army. hmmm

I sited just a few examples of incompetence such as the Army?s Special Operations Task Force that initially investigated Staff Sergeant Maseth?s death, referring to the water pump "motor" as the water pump "engine". It was an electric motor. I have a link on my page to the Majority Staff Analysis put together by Congressman Waxman?s staff. This was very informative. I also have links to the entire 2 hour hearing, all the testimony and supporting documents.

I need your exert opinions and insights. Am I missing something? Could something else have been done? I welcome your comments. And the Senate and House read my blog and are looking for answers as well.

This is just more than what one journeyman can do.....I'm calling in the reinforcements!

KBR has changed their hiring criteria for Electricians

KBR has changed their hiring criteria for Electricians

It would appear that KBR has changed their hiring policy for electricians in Iraq and Afghanistan. Proof of license is now required, there is a 10 question test over the phone (woo hoo) and they have increased the wages significantly.

Licensed Master electricians should be making 14K/mo and licensed journeyman should be making about 11K.

There is an article in the Electrical Worker this month, page two and then the vice presidents statement, page 14.

This is a small victory but it is a victory and we will take it. I won't be happy until US workers that work on US government funded projects overseas are afforded the same protections as their co-workers in the States..ie, OSHA protection and labor laws.

We'll stay on it. Thanks for the support from this forum.

Myself and others are doing whatever is necessary to not let this and other stories die. There is so much stuff I am finding out about that I wasn't aware of while I was there. Naive I guess.

There is a link to the show on my page for those that are interested.
