Ok, I am studying all the 3 phase material I can get my hands on and I thought I understood the whole equal impedence of windings, delta, wye, and the function of a 3 and 4 wire neutrals....I guess not. How can things like water heaters and compressors in dwelling units operate with 2 phases and no neutral? Im sure Ill get called a moron for this but I truly dont understand.

All you need is two conductors with a potential between them from the source to force current through a load. This can be between two ungrounded phase conductors, between a phase and neutral conductor, or even between a phase conductor and a grounding conductor.

RampyElectric,

The only stupid question is the one you don't ask. Good luck and keep up the good work.
