We are looking at replacing some 400Watt Metal Halide lamps with LED retrofit lamps. This retrofit lamp requires bypassing the ballast and running the lamp at line voltage. I asked them if they had a UL 1598C approved procedure for bypassing the ballast but they do not. Should we install these lamps or look for other options? Is a UL 1598C approved procedure required to meet the NEC when bypassing ballasts?

Thanks in Advance

UL 1598C is a listing program for LED retrofit kits. The fixture will maintain the UL rating if a UL 1598c listed retrofit kit is used and the instructions are followed. If the retrofit kit is not UL 1598c listed then after the retrofit your UL listed fixture is no longer UL rated.

Was wondering if other are requiring this listing or if they are avoiding the retrofits. Starting to see many safety issues cause by improper retrofits and ballast bypass.

Thanks
