Ballast disconnects

Renovating an existing space which is presently storage as well as some existing offices. Will be re-using fluorescent troffers from existing offices and new troffers to complete the layout. Will the existing troffers need to be retrofitted with ballast disconnects. All new fixtures will come with ballast disconnects standard

You will need to check with you local AHJ to see what they will require.

IMHO, you would need to install the disconnects because the fixtures are being relocated and not left as existing. If you were leaving the fixtures alone and not moving them then you might say they are existing and would not need to install the disconnects.

Really though the little quick plug disconnects that you can buy aren't really the expensive and are easy to install, so I would just install them and be done.

By the way welcome to the forum.:)

Are you under 2005 or 2008 NEC ? If ''08'' and you are disconnecting then reconnecting the old fixtures I say yes you need disconnects. If you are not disconnecting the old fixtures then I would say no need to add them. If under 2005 no need to add them.

The requirement for ballast disconnects was new to the 2005 NEC, it is located in section 410.73(G). This section was relocated in the 2008 NEC to section 410.130(G).

I agree, especially if you purchase the ones that allow you to go in out with your branch circuit, and allowing the ballast leads to be termed,also..
