Is there anything in the NEC that prevents me from running a bare copper equipment grounding conductor through a nipple for a sub-panel?

Not that I can see.

250.118 Types of Equipment Grounding Conductors.
The equipment grounding conductor run with or enclosing the circuit conductors shall be one or more or a combination of the following:
FPN: For effective ground-fault current path, see 250.2 Definition.
(1) A copper, aluminum, or copper-clad aluminum conductor. This conductor shall be solid or stranded; insulated, covered, or bare; and in the form of a wire or a busbar of any shape.

Not enough information in my view. Don't understand why you would be asking the question, unless you are doing something out of the ordinary?

I would say see: Section 300.3

If it is as simple as you stated, then I'm with Chris

I have no NEC art , But it is my recollection. #8 bare solid is not allowed in conduit with current carrying conductors. (or nipples)

Guess you meant this:

310.3 Stranded Conductors.
Where installed in raceways, conductors of size 8 AWG and larger shall be stranded.
Exception: As permitted or required elsewhere in this Code.

i'm asking because i did it and then was told that the NEC did not permit a bare equipment ground to be run in conduit. i had never heard of that and couldn't find anything about it.
