Can you use a years worth of electrical bills to get a baseline for KW usage?

Here we go! The customer would like to put a 2000sq' addition on. He has asked me to see if his 400amp single phase service will be large enough. I would like to know if any of you have used the electrical bills kw readings the help determine this?

TIA

I have never used it myself. But 220.87(1) does allow it. The problem is that it requires the series of electric bills to give the peak demand over the one year period. You get billed for kw-hrs, and (generally) not for KW. So the electric bill may or may not give you the information you need.

And if you don't have 1 year, there is an exception that allows a method using a minimum 30-day measurement with necessary adjustments for seasonal differences.

We should make a law they have to charge a set rate for each KWH. Baseline = Ripoff.

While I do think the customer has a baseline after a year. You would have to almost have the their program.

If you tried to chalkboard it out you would need 150 people for a week. Definitely a vein popper.

I have found the POCO only monitors peak KW loads on commercial. I have used it to submit plans for approval to expand gear.

You might want to look at Article 220.83. depending on what there exactly doing with the Ponderosa, you might keep the other close articles in mind.

I really have to say that I was having a Code moment till I re-found Article 220.14 & Article 220.16. ;)
