is this true.. in a finished basement sheetrock and carpet. no gfci required. an unfinished basement concrete walls and floor gfci req. ( no wet locations) thanks

More or less yes.

Finished basements do not require GFCIs

Unfinished basements or unfinished sections of finished basement must have GFCI protection.

The NEC does not spell out when unfinished becomes finished, that will be up to the local inspector or AHJ.

Paint the floor and walls and I call it finished...:)
That's where the grey area starts. Some people do just that... add the old couch and TV that used to be in the living room, a couple of throw rugs, and viola... "finished" basement. When I doubt, it's just easier to put in the GFCI's. By the time I got ahold of the inspector and put the administrative effort into the phonecall(s), I could have installed GFCI's for the same price. Just my opinion.

Not to get off topic, but IMO I think attic receptacles should be GFI, hardly a problem in the winter, but come summertime, working on equipment, sweating like a pig... makes you wonder...

A basement finished or unfinished has more implications then whether to GFCI or not. If it is finished, it would need to be treated as most other habitable rooms. That could be more expensive than just installing a GFCI receptacle.

Good point... so do you bother to rough in to code? or just add a gfi for the receptacle behind the TV they added? makes a huge difference... I would say if there is a permit involved it is indeed a finished basement...

I would say if I'm getting paid I'll put in what it takes to make it finished, if not it's unfinished!!!!!!

should be the 1st priority here. To many people do not realize why you need to have a GFI with a concrete floor. (every homeowner I know) Tell them to spend the $35 bucks it can save there life..
