Re: bath fan light

I have never seen or heard that requirement.
The fan in a bath without windows is a building code.

Sometimes I am asked to put fan and light on separate switches. I know of no requirement that they be on at the same time.

Re: bath fan light

It might be required in commercial bath.In residential it all most always separate switches unless it's a real cheap apartment or very low end home.Do you want to hear that fan just to shave? If there is a rule it's not in NEC
Look at it his way , if they had a window (min 4? sq ft opening)then a fan isn't even required.Always thought that to be stupid for a house in Fl were the AC is almost always in use.Who would open that window?Have suggested they put it on a timer.Who sits there extra 5 minutes till the room has cleared ?

Re: bath fan light

Just did, or should I say helped, on a 1/2 mil home. Althought the f*rt fan was wire for seperate light/fan operation the builder wanted one switch.

He also would put NO ceiling lights in the bedrooms. Did I say $500k? He said that the buyers always wanted a better light, so he did not want to nego. with them on a light.

First ad last with this builder. He was framing AND changing as I was pulling wire. After I started he brought the HVAC guy back to add stuff.

Hey I am not complaining. This my only bad GC story and it was in this last month so I thought I would vent.

Re: bath fan light

Did i miss something.I look at the print ,if it showed 1 switch for both fan and light, then that's what i bidded and what they get.If it showed separate switches thats what they get.Should the GC come along and say he only wants 1 switch after i have wired it as 2 ,then inform him that it will be an extra.Any deviation from a print is a change.Tell me before i start and it might be free.In upscale homes many EC will box the house, including all cans and light fixtures as to print. Then allow the GC and buyer to view it and except it before the first wire goes in.Inform them that a charge will be made to move anything. If possible walk the house with both of them and you will have a much easier time making every one happy. This of course is a custom home and a few hours should be within reason. Also a good time to sell them on some extras.Buyers appreciate that personal touch and your job will go smoother.
As for GC adding and changing once i started ,i too would get ticked real fast. There changes often affect your measurements to meet codes. Some think nothing of adding knee walls at entry and look at you funny when you exsplain that they now need a receptacle and that they caused the red tag from the inspector. An x boss had a GC that was forever making changes and not ready when he called for trim or rough.Print shows door swing to left and on trim you find it to right, then they tell you your switch is behind the door!!!!!
After about a dozen like this i asked him if we were making enough to put up with his B S.We dropped him.Since i seen a good friend about to get had by this GC his new customer ,i warned him to watch out.Found out later this GC was on about his 10th EC.Some GC'S are just not worth knowing, drop them fast.

In MA all residential baths require a fan window or not. As for switching seperate switches are acceptable. Check local building codes for area.

Just goes to show that from state to state things change.Might well be a state or county that has local amendment to say 1 switch.

Re: bath fan light

When I worked in a supply house I had a customer (home owner) with a remote fart fan that served two bathrooms. It was controlled by three way switches. If someone left it on (easy to do)it would keep him awake at night. (very anal) I helped him out by ordering a pair of three way timers. Yes they do exist! Each timer controls one traveler so the wirering is important but it worked and this guy was able to sleep better.

Re: bath fan light

I recall a house that had that remote fan and it took care of 3 or 4 baths(is there a 4 way timer?).This by far had to be the most stupid thing i ever seen. Think about it.Turning it on because one bathroom is being used ,and pull cold air from all the bathrooms. And yes they could be running all day(poor AC unit).Whats sad is some guy got paid to come up with this crazy idea.Like i said only seen it once.
Seems like if they got that kind of money they would buy the $200 jobs that don't make noise, and some have built in sensors to turn self on and off(not cheap)

Re: bath fan light

Jim, those Fantec's are some of the coolest things goin'. Super quality and silent. Don't knock it 'till ya' try it.

We wire them with SP switches in parallel. This way one room cannot turn off the fan with someone else in the other....room.
Now I'm confused. :p

Re: bath fan light

Ok now I'm even more confused. How will switches paralleled help? Now the dam thing takes a trip from room to room to see who left it on.I see this as one of them high tech ideas that cost $$$$$$$$$$$$and could be solved easy with a high quality single unit.No way do i want a large fan sending my cold air outside from all the bathrooms just because i took a dump in one,Think this out, wife and i getting ready to go out for evening. That master bath will have fan going for an hour.Bad enough that i loose cold air in master but now there are 3 other rooms loosing cold air or heat.Efficiant is not a word that applies here.

Re: bath fan light

Fan in attic or crawl space. J-box with feed at fan. SP switch loop to each room.
Either or both sw on = fan on.
Both sw off = fan off.

Works great, trust me.

IMO if you worry about pulling your A/C out with your bath fans you need a bigger A/C.

Re: bath fan light

Now if you used a 15 min timer in place of them switches you might have a winner.Gotta be cheaper than 3 way timers. And they would solve the problem of turning off.Your not selling me on 1/2 horse fan to get rid of smell ,cause my s--t don't stink.LOL
