I tried to crossref this in archives but didnt find it.

I have a situation where the bathroom is on first floor in a two floor single residential dwelling. I have access below bathroom, but no access above. The shower is located on exterior wall other 3 walls are interior. Here is my issue:

What are the codes related to placement of bath fan within a shower zone on a wall? Not only codes, but safety stipulations? I need to install a bath fan/vent - no light in, but the joices run opposite direction of way I need to run vent to outside wall. I really cant put it in ceiling without a cosiderable amount of surgery to walls and ceiling. I was considering placing it within shower zone on wall, but I dont think it will be within code to do this. I cant necessarily run the vent to the basement and vent out at basement window hight either. My brain is being racked by this. I might just have to go in and demo the wall and ceiling a bit to get the job done within code.

Re: Bath Vent Location

The venting of the bath fan fall under the HVAC codes and is not addressed by the NEC.

If the fan is listed for the shower area and GFCI protection then you could install it over the tub.

Re: Bath Vent Location

Panasonic makes a wall fan (FV-08WQ1) that is UL listed for tub/shower enclosures. I?m sure Nutone/Broan does also but I?m more familiar with Panasonic fans.

Re: Bath Vent Location

If you put the fan in the ceiling in the joist bay closest to the exterior wall you should only have to vent out through the wall.

Re: Bath Vent Location

I am thinking about trying to mount in joist bay closest to wall. It will be directly over shower this way, so I just need to make sure I am not violating code being right there over shower, but it sounds like it may be a non-issue like that.

Read the instruction sheet that came with it. If it is listed for over the tub it will say. Most I have seen that will allow the tub area installation also requite GFCI protection.

Make the heat man worry about the vent. You don?t hold a license to install vents, do you? He does.
:)

You're assuming too much. There's more of this country that does not require such a license than does require one.
